A page from Sue Parman’s 1964 journal when she was working on “A Song for J.R.R. Tolkien.” As writers, it is helpful to have places where you can mess around with ideas. Sue, who was 18 years old at the time, was working out music to go with Tolkien’s Elvish poetry. Tollkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, often combined drawings and maps with writing in sketchbooks.
